Farm & CSA Styles

Light that survives midday in a field and a dark barn

100+ curated styles built for the two lighting situations farm marketing actually happens in: a field at eleven, where overhead sun turns greens grey, and a packing shed with one bulb. FoodShot pulls the contrast back, corrects the blue cast, and keeps soil reading as proof of a morning harvest. Pale reclaimed timber and open daylight for share boxes, dark oak and low warm falloff for eggs and preserves, near-black earth and slate for root crops. See our grocery stores page and fruit photography guide.

Builder Mode

Surface plus backdrop plus this week's share

Pick a surface — pale pine packing table, weathered stall timber, riven slate, seamless white. Choose a backdrop — open barn daylight, a bright canopy wash, flat studio white. Upload your packing-table photo and Builder Mode composites all three into one image — no pallet jack, hose reel or parked van in frame. A member sees the whole sign-up page at once — Builder Mode keeps forty weeks of shares on the same surface under the same light. Milling or bakery side line? See our home bakers page.

My Styles

Lock the share look once, apply it to every csa box

Save the look once and every week inherits it. A new csa box ships weekly for forty weeks, each shot in a five-minute window between packing and loading — styled from scratch, the season turns into a patchwork. My Styles fixes the surface, light and crop once and applies that recipe to every box; one saved look renders square for social, wide for email, tall for the sign-up page. Shot Wednesday evening, in the email Thursday morning. See our wineries and butcher shops pages.

Perfect For

Every kind of farm selling straight to the people who eat it

From a single-acre market garden to a diversified farm running shares, stalls and a u-pick weekend, the problem is identical: the selling happens in an email, the photos happen in a field at midday, and nobody's job is photography.

🥬

CSA Share Programmes

Your sign-up page carries the whole season's revenue in a single scroll, and members judge the box from one tailgate photo. Shoot the packed box before the van leaves, restyle it in about 2 minutes, and Thursday's email shows what lands on the doorstep.

🧺

Farmers Market Stalls & Booths

Your stall looks incredible for six Saturday hours and invisible for the other one hundred and sixty-two. Photograph the table before the crowd arrives, restyle it, and post a stall shot that reads as clearly on a phone as it does across the aisle.

🥚

Egg & Meat Subscriptions

Pasture eggs and whole-animal shares sell on trust, which is hard to photograph in a walk-in cooler under a fluorescent tube. A carton of mixed brown, blue and freckled shells photographs grey; restyle it and show subscribers exactly what the premium buys.

🍓

U-Pick Farms & Agritourism

U-pick and farm tours are sold weeks ahead on fruit that is not ripe yet, or on last season's picture. Take the basket shot when the fruit is right and a season of listing images looks like the field on its best afternoon.

🍯

Value-Added Farm Products

Preserves, honey, flour and pickles carry the winter and are the hardest things on the farm to photograph: glass, reflections, a shed with one bulb. Shoot the jar on any surface and get an image clean enough for a shelf listing or wholesale sheet.

🚜

Farm Stands & Roadside Stalls

An unstaffed stand sells whatever the social post says is on it, and a grey photo of a crate makes people drive past. Shoot what went out this morning, restyle it on the walk back, and post something that stops a scroll.

No. FoodShot never sends a photographer, never runs an on-site or studio shoot, never prints a market sign, sticker or share-box insert for you, and never invents produce you do not actually grow. It restyles photos you take yourself. You put this week's box, carton or crate on any flat surface you have — the packing table, the tailgate, a plank across two buckets — take a phone photo, upload it, and FoodShot re-lights and re-stages that exact image. The same vegetables, the same quantities, the same week, the same soil on the carrots. Nothing is fabricated from scratch, which matters enormously in a share programme, because your member opens the real box on Thursday and holds it up against the photo you sent on Tuesday. What changes is the light, the surface underneath and the clutter behind it. Never the food.

It should, and you should check that it does. The restyle works from your photograph, so it starts from the box exactly as you packed it: if the box has six items this week because the brassicas got hit, the photo should show six items, with the carrots still forked and short and the tomatoes still green-shouldered. AI restyling can occasionally add, drop or tidy an item, so compare each result with the real box before you send it. What changes is that the midday shadows soften, the greens come back to the colour they actually are, the blue cast the packing shed put into everything is corrected, and the yard behind the box is replaced with a clean surface. Members are extremely good at spotting a share photo that does not match the share, and they will tell you. A picture that flatters honest produce keeps working all season; a picture of a box you did not send stops working the first Thursday.

You do not need one. The best setup on almost every farm is a flat surface in open shade — the packing bench just inside the barn door, the tailgate parked in the shadow of the building, or a plank of plywood laid on two bins. Open shade gives you soft, even light with no hard overhead shadows, which is the single biggest improvement you can make before you upload anything. Fill the box a little fuller than usual so the top layer reads, turn the most colourful items face up, and shoot from a slightly high three-quarter angle rather than straight down, so the depth of the box is visible. Take three or four frames, pick the sharpest, and let FoodShot handle the rest. It genuinely does not matter if the background is a stack of bulk bins and a hose reel — that part gets replaced.

Yes, and doing so is what makes a small farm look like it has a marketing department. One upload can be rendered at several crops from the same saved style, so the square version goes to the social post, the wide version becomes the header of the weekly share email, and the tall version sits on the sign-up page. Because the surface, light direction and background are locked in your saved style, the June box and the October box sit side by side on the sign-up page without one looking like a different farm. That consistency is what actually sells a season's subscription: a prospective member scrolling your page is not judging any single photo, they are judging whether the whole thing looks like a going concern that will still be delivering in week thirty.

All of them work, and they are usually the ones that need the most help. Eggs are photographed in a cool room under fluorescent light that turns beautiful blue-green and freckled shells into grey ovals, and the moulded pulp carton reflects almost nothing back, so the picture goes flat. Meat shares are wrapped in butcher paper and photographed in a walk-in, where the light is both dim and blue. Preserves and honey are glass, which means every jar mirrors the whole shed back into the lens and the fruit inside disappears. FoodShot handles each of these differently: warm low light and dark oak for the egg carton, cool clean light for the packed protein share, and a hard raking source through the shoulder of a jar so the preserve glows from the inside instead of reflecting the ceiling.

It is, and the workflow is built around exactly that constraint. A weekly programme does not fail because a farm cannot take a good photograph — it fails because the only window to take one is the four minutes between the last box being packed and the van pulling out, and nobody is going to set up lights in that window. Take a phone photo in those four minutes. The restyle takes about 2 minutes and it runs while you are doing something else, so the image is waiting when you next look at your phone. The practical rhythm most farms land on is: shoot Wednesday while packing, check the image over dinner, and send Thursday morning. No booking, no scheduling around weather, no waiting on anybody else's calendar, and no week where the email goes out with no picture at all.

Your growing deserves better share photos.
